The Senate Environmental Resources & Energy Committee today (February 3) approved a letter to the Independent Regulatory Review Commission (IRRC) formally opposing a Regulation to have Pennsylvania join the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), according to Senator Joe Pittman, who serves as the committee’s Vice Chairman.
The IRRC is an independent agency of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It is responsible for the review of regulations from nearly all state agencies, boards and commissions before they go into effect.
“The Governor’s carbon tax proposal would devastate the local economy in my district,” said Senator Pittman. “Beyond the fact that it would force the closure of coal-fired plants and eliminate jobs, the district I represent relies heavily on the production of carbon-emitting electricity to adequately fund public education.”
Prior to the committee vote, Senator Pittman detailed his opposition to RGGI and the fact that the carbon tax it would impose would eliminate good paying jobs and devastate local families.
