Pittman, Smith & Struzzi Announce More Than $1.8 Million for Indiana County Transportation Infrastructure Projects

HARRISBURG – Sen. Joe Pittman (R-41) and Reps. Brian Smith (R-66) and Jim Struzzi (R-62) announced $1,805,023 in Multimodal Transportation Funding has been awarded for three projects to foster greater economic development and improve local transportation infrastructure in Indiana County. These investments were approved by the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) on February 24, 2025 in Harrisburg.

“These projects are an extensive undertaking which aim to significantly improve the quality and safety of local roadways and bridges, benefiting both area residents and visitors alike,” Pittman said. “By addressing deteriorating conditions, the projects will enhance driving experiences, reduce vehicle wear and tear, and improve overall traffic flow. I’m pleased to have advocated for this substantial state support which will provide a significant benefit for the long-term stability of our local transportation infrastructure.”

Blacklick Township is receiving a grant in the amount of $855,023 to replace and widen the Nehrig Road Bridge.

“Growing our economy requires first class roads and bridges,” Struzzi said. “These essential projects will ensure Indiana County residents, emergency services vehicles, transit, and commerce can safely travel throughout the county and pave the way for future growth.”

Also approved through this round of funding is $450,000 for the replacement of a culvert on Behm Road in North Mahoning Township, and $500,000 to widen and completely replace the Martin Road bridge located in Rayne Township.

“While not as many cars may travel our rural roads as those in the cities, I would argue they’re even more important,” Smith said. “Many of us live several miles away from the nearest grocery store, school or hospital, so we need those roads to be in good shape. This funding will help make sure our communities can stay connected, both literally and figuratively.”

The Multimodal Transportation Fund provides grants to encourage economic development and ensure that a safe and reliable system of transportation is available to the residents of the commonwealth. Funds may be used for the development, rehabilitation and enhancement of transportation assets to existing communities, streetscape, lighting, sidewalk enhancement, pedestrian safety, connectivity of transportation assets and transit-oriented development.
