Members from the #hospitality and #tourism industries were at the capitol this week as part of the @prlaorg legislative day.
I was pleased to meet with constituents who made the trip to Harrisburg, including Laura Herrington from @indianacountytouristbureau and Ann Nemanic from @go_laurelhighlands. It was helpful to understand the issues affecting the industry, as we work to enact pro-growth policies and legislation for Pennsylvania.

HARRISBURG โ Pennsylvania Senate President Pro Tempore Kim Ward (R-39), Senate Majority Leader Joe Pittman (R-41) and Senate Appropriations Committee Chair Scott Martin (R-13) issued the following statement today in reaction to the Shapiro Administration announcement of the refinancing of approximately $1.159 billion in General Obligation refunding bonds, touting responsible financial management:
โItโs good news that Pennsylvania taxpayers will save $71 million due to the refinancing of state bonds. Our strong financial position today is because Senate Republicans have repeatedly fought the massive spending impulses of the Wolf Administration and Shapiro Administration over the past several years. In fact, the vast majority of the savings in our stateโs fund balance and our Rainy Day Fund were built before Gov. Shapiro even took office.
โGov. Shapiroโs budget proposal this year totals nearly $51.5 billion โ an increase of $3.6 billion from the current yearโs budget โ and does not include a realistic path to close the stateโs multi-billion-dollar structural deficit. This unrealistic spending would ultimately lead to future tax increases for Pennsylvanians.
โSenate Republicans have been honest with Pennsylvanians about the realities of Pennsylvaniaโs current fiscal position, because we believe taxpayers deserve an authentic accounting and a clear picture of what the governorโs spending plans would mean for hardworking families throughout the Commonwealth. We will continue to stand up for Pennsylvania taxpayers and families as we work to reach a responsible budget agreement and keep our state in a strong fiscal position.โ

He recently finished his sophomore year at The University of Alabama where he is pursuing a bachelorโs degree, majoring in #economics and #history. He is a member of the Alabama Menโs Club Crew Team and has also served as a research assistant compiling vehicular crash data and variables, such as the safety components of different vehicle models.
Caleb is a great addition to our team, and we look forward to the contributions he will make in helping to serve constituents this summer!

I recently had the pleasure of meeting with PennAEYC Pennsylvania Association for the Education of Young Children. @pennaeyc is a nonprofit organization for people who want to learn about and promote the value of quality care and education from birth to age 8. Their mission is to be an effective voice for high quality #earlychildhoodcare and #education.
A group of five members came to Harrisburg to educate lawmakers on their mission, ask for support of various proposed investments in the state budget, discuss the child care staffing crisis and impact on #workingfamilies, and share other information relating to the Early Learning Pennsylvania coalition and Thriving PA campaign, which are working to increase awareness of and foster support for infant and toddler early intervention. I appreciated hearing their perspectives.

Thank you to #students from Homer-Center Senior High School and Ligonier Valley High School who stopped by my Harrisburg office as part of the American Lung Association Advocacy Day. We discussed the Clean Indoor Air Act, tobacco prevention measures, and addressing youth tobacco use . We also talked about the importance of safety on the roads, as many of these young men and women are starting to drive in an age with a significant number of distractions.
#Pennsylvania needs our next generation to engage in learning about the legislative process. It was great to see familiar faces, as many of the students also participated in my Student Government Seminar last month!

Vandergrift Borough and East Vandergrift Borough in Westmoreland County have received state grants totaling $431,078 for infrastructure and recreational development projects. The funding was awarded through the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) Community and Economic Assistance Program.
Investing in local projects goes a long way to help ensure the ongoing vibrancy of our communities. Supporting public safety and recreational initiatives is an important way to enhance quality of life and to help foster greater economic growth within our region. Iโm proud to have advocated for this funding and commend area leaders for recognizing the significance of these projects and seeking out assistance from the state level.
Vandergrift Borough has received $278,397 for the Grant and McKinley Avenue Reconstruction and Ninth Street Retaining Wall Reconstruction Design Projects. These projects included the paving of approximately 1,030 linear feet of several deteriorated streets within the Borough. Grant and McKinley Avenues are main streets in the center of the business district and improvements aim to reduce safety hazards to motorists and pedestrians. In addition, design of a replacement to the current retaining wall along Ninth Street will be undertaken.
East Vandergrift Borough has received $152,681 for the East Vandergrift River Park Renovation Project. The project included resurfacing the current basketball court, the creation of a pickleball court, and the purchase and installation of playground equipment. With these substantial changes the Borough now has a fully functioning park for the first time in over a decade.
